Democrats, Unions and NAFTA
So first someone leaks a story about an Obama staffer calling Canadians and letting them know that despite what he says on NAFTA, don't worry he doesn't really mean it and NAFTA will continue business as usual when he's president. Hillary blasts him on it (remember Bill was the one that signed it when he was pres. so I don't know what her deal is here anyway). Then someone leaks a story about Hillary doing the same thing.
He's where the unions come in on this. Unions always back democrats. In fact unions usually contribute to the campaigns of democrats. It was a point of contention to me when I was a member of Local 494. When I paid my quarterly dues, I withheld the sum of money each quarter that was my share of the contribution to the DNC. This only became possible after legislation forcing unions to disclose what their political contributions were and to whom. Back to the topic; Unions were and are fervently opposed to NAFTA and other free trade agreements because it is usually their members that ultimately pay the price in loss of jobs to cheap labor in Mexico in NAFTA's case. So why will they once again back a Democrat when the end result will be the same?
Both Parties are so far off base on free trade that the working person's interests are totally ignored for the benefit of a few. I am not anti trade but it needs to be FAIR trade. Free is not free to the working men and women of America. Furthermore the trade arrangement needs to take into consideration the safety of the American public. Anti Freeze in your Chinese toothpaste anyone?
Our trade deficit is growing faster than out national budget deficit this means quite simply that the majority of our consumer dollars end up overseas or out of the country anyway never to come back. Many of these countries (OPEC nations, China and Russia to name a few) are hostile towards the United States and would rather that we were all dead.
John McCain, on his website, details his strategy which sounds pretty much the same as the failed policies of the last 15-20 years.
For this election cycle our only hope is that an independent candidate can capture our attention and motivate us to throw the elites our of Washington.
