Bill Gates Lobbies for expansion of H1B program
I'm not sure what it is but every time I blog on a subject and mention one thing or another, it pops up in national news in the next few days. H1B was one of the topics I mentioned in "Yup, there it is". This week Bill Gates lobbied congress to lift the cap on H1B Visas.
My response to Mr. Gates, Why don't you use some of your record 65% profit gain to train American workers to do the work? I think you could probably attract as many workers as you want by offering your $100K that you say you pay starting H1B workers. Of course that is a flat out lie. Further research shows that only 3.3% of Microsoft's green card workers make $100K per year.
This lie in itself shows that Bill just wants to continue to artificially deflate the wages of tech workers in the US. The influx of cheap foreign labor into the tech economy is one of the contributing factors to the dwindling number of college students entering the tech and science programs in the US.
As recently as the late 90's tech programs were very sought after courses. A Graduate of one of these programs was nearly guaranteed to make $50K upon graduation and within a few years easily $80K or much higher. Today graduates can look forward to $35K to $40K and a career of trying to keep up with technology. The way it used to be done was employers would pay for certification on the new technologies and workers were rewarded with pay incentives to certification. Today very few companies pay to keep their tech workers up to date and the reward for staying up to date is you get to keep your job. CCIE's once making $120K+ are now looking for work or making $75K-$80K. Many have left the industry. 65,000 low wage workers is too many now, don't lift the cap.
Why are banks failing? When a tech worker making $120K buys a house based on that income level. Then the government allows (in the past) hundreds of thousands of Low wage persons into the industry. Wages drop, the tech worker can longer afford his house at $75K. He then defaults on the loan. Factories with workers making $25/hr close and send the jobs to China. WalMart pays $10/hr. Can't pay your mortgage on that. GM buys out it's $28/hr workforce to replace them with $14/hr. Let me tell you this. Houses aren't getting any cheaper and Execs sure aren't hurting.
